Before I actually experienced being
self hypnotised, I had a pretty Hollywood notion of what it meant. I had the typical image in my head of myself on a couch and some guy swinging a pocket watch in front of my face saying, "You are growing very sleepy." It turns out that is not how it works at all.
Self-hypnosis is really just a technique for relaxing and shutting down the mind at the end of the day. Here's the routine that I have been using to get the best sleep of my life!
1. Before I go to bed, I take a warm bath. This totally relaxes me and makes me feel drowsy.
2. Then, lying on my back with my eyes closed I take several deep breaths in and out. The calming affect of deep breathing really is amazing.
3. Next, I flex and release muscles one by one from my toes to my fingers slowly working my way up through my legs to my abdomen, shoulders, and finally arms and fingers.
4. A few more deep breathes and sometimes I pass out right then and there. But if my mind is still meandering, I start counting down from ten. As each number floats by in my mind's eye, I feel myself sinking deeper and deeper into total relaxation.
At first, I had to work my way from one to ten a couple of times before falling asleep. Now I am on week three and sometimes I barely get through eight before I am down for the count. The quality of sleep I get is ten times better since I first went to bed self-hypnotised. I wake up feeling refreshed, energized and alert.
Here's another trick I discovered. If I feel a little tired in the afternoon, I work through steps two and three and finish it off with a few rounds of deep breathing. This mini relaxation session leaves me feeling way better than any mid-day nap. Try
self-hypnosis for yourself and discover the joy of quality sleep.
